SHV is the revolutionary new digital video format currently proposed by NHK of Japan, the BBC and Italian national broadcaster RAI. This format has a resolution of 7680 x 4320 pixels, four times as wide and four times as high as existing HDTV.

Technology underpins new developments in high definition. In particular, there is still a high
expectation on compression to manage high HD bit rates. How close are broadcasters to a
fully IT based environment? Issues with motion blur have been highlighted by the BBC who
are now advocating even higher frame rates for the future.

Analogue, digital, and HD place high demand on spectrum usage and provide broadcasters
with the challenge of having to simulcast, in some cases, all three versions. DVB-T2 is

radical look at compression strategies?

Today's savvy consumers determine the success and failure of new products and technology.
They will be the ones who determine the success or failure of HD and 3D in the home.
The movie industry and broadcasters are trialling 3D broadcasting to the home. In the near
future, Blu-ray will be distributed with 3D content and display manufacturers already have a
consumer proposition for 3D.
